Lupita Nyong'o joins cast of 'Star Wars'

Three months after winning an Oscar, Lupita Nyong’o is going galactic!

The Walt Disney Co. announced Monday that Nyong’o is joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. Rumors began swirling back in March when Lupita’s name was in the running to play Princess Leia and many questioned whether her race and skin color would be an issue for die-hard fans. Nevertheless, it looks like the powers that be have spoken and her skills are undeniable.

John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the Saga Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Though at the time we don’t know who she is playing, Lupita was previously rumored for the part of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s granddaughter.

Production is underway for the film, which is being directed by J.J. Abrams. It’s slated to open in December 2015.
